  1. Nov 27,  · Three killer tracks from Dexter Gordon, recorded on June 2nd by Jacques Lubin at CBS studios in Paris. It's hard to discribe this album, but what I can say is that it is just a master piece, with such a creativity, openness and invention/5(24).
  2. Feb 15,  · One Flight Up is a masterpiece. It was recorded in Paris in The three tracks on this LP are very intense and have the same dark feeling as Miles Davis' soundtrack to Ascenseur pour l'echafaud, which was recorded in Paris as well, though almost seven years earlier. The black and white LP cover matches this dark mood perfectly/5(15).
  3. Dexter Gordon albums from the late fifties and sixties tended to be all of a kind: Dexter, alone or with one or two additional horns, and rhythm section, playing straight ahead bop –all the parts in place but nothing too cerebral, and certainly not a lot of time spent on arranging/5(83).
  4. Dexter Gordon's hard-bop classic One Flight Up - one of the finest examples of hard bop jazz ever released on LP. Jack Lubin engineered the session on June 2, at CBS Studios in Paris. The synergy between Gordon and his fellow trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Neils-Henning Orsted and drummer Art Taylor is almost unreal in /5(85).
  5. At around 47 substantive minutes of music, One Flight Up stands as a testament to Dexter Gordon's viability as a bandleader and teammate, while his individualism is somewhat sublimated. It's a good listen to digest all the way through, especially if you are as patient as the performers, who have a lot to say.7/

Darn That Dream: Customer Reviews ( Stars) 7 person(s) If I had to tell someone what Jazz (bop) sounded like back in the 60’ Lp would surely do it. I did not want to flip the album over because “Tanya” (all of side one.
  7. The music of “One Flight Up” fully reflects this newfound freedom. Formally, this is expressed in the way the open, mainly modal, structures of “Tanya” and “Coppin’ The Haven” allow space for each musician to express himself, unhurried, untroubled by conventions of time and length, able to take just as much room as they wish to get their musical ideas over.
  8. Leonard Feather’s original album liner notes for “One Flight Up” and the additional notes prepared by Bob Blumenthal for the RVG edition in both refer to a round table discussion for “Down Beat” in in which Dexter Gordon and Kenny Drew (who plays piano on the album) talk about the advantages of being expatriates.
